Katano lies in the north-east of Osaka Prefecture, where the Osaka Plain meets the wooded hills of the Ikoma range. From above, the western half of the town is a close, fine-grained pattern of residential streets and railway lines, while the eastern half rises into forest, with roads narrowing and bending into the valleys.
The Amanogawa, whose name means Milky Way, runs through Katano, and the town has long been associated with the Tanabata legend of two star-crossed lovers. In the hills, Hoshida Park has a long pedestrian suspension bridge called Hoshi no Buranko, the swing of the stars, stretched above the forest. The Keihan Katano Line serves the town and gives it a clear railway spine.

To the east, the street grid gives way to forested slopes. Roads become fewer and more winding, and the map lightens as it reaches the hills.

In the hills sits Hoshida Park, known for its long suspension footbridge above the trees. On the map it appears as an open, green area at the edge of the town.
