Kayalpattinam sits on the Gulf of Mannar coast in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, a short distance north of Tiruchendur. On the map the town presses right up against the sea. A long, nearly straight shoreline runs along one side, with a tight mesh of streets behind it and low coastal country opening inland toward palm groves and scattered villages.
The town is known as one of the old trading ports of this coast. Its long-established Muslim maritime community built mosques that have stood for centuries, and that history shows in the plan. Narrow streets run close together, houses share walls, and the lanes seem arranged by neighbourhood rather than by a single grid. The result is one of the finest urban textures in the region.
