Khalīfān lies in the mountainous north-east of the Erbil Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. On a map, the setting shapes almost everything. The town is drawn out along a valley floor, with the main road running through it and side streets branching off where the terrain allows, rather than spreading into a regular grid.
The surrounding ridges keep the built area compact. Streets stop where the slopes steepen, and the edges of the town are irregular, following contours rather than property lines. Watercourses come down from the heights and join the valley, and the roads leading out of town bend to find the easiest line through the hills, which gives the map a strong sense of direction.
