Khot'kovo lies in the Sergiyev Posad district of Moscow Oblast, along the railway line that runs north-east from Moscow towards Sergiyev Posad. From above, the town stretches along the tracks and the small, meandering Pazha river, with blocks of flats near the station, low-rise houses on the outskirts and wide areas of forest all around.
The town grew up around the Pokrovsky Khotkov Convent, where the parents of Saint Sergius of Radonezh are buried, and it remains an important stop on the pilgrimage route to the Trinity Lavra. Just to the south is Abramtsevo, the country estate that became a centre for Russian artists in the nineteenth century.
