Kirtipur sits on a low ridge on the southwestern side of the Kathmandu Valley, a few kilometres from the centre of the capital. From above, the old town reads as a dense cluster of short, winding lanes along the top of the hill. Around it the valley floor spreads out in a looser pattern of newer streets, fields and roads running towards Kathmandu.
The town is one of the traditional Newar settlements of the valley. It is best known for its long resistance to the forces of Prithvi Narayan Shah in the eighteenth century, before the unification of Nepal. Temples and brick courtyards still sit along the ridge, and on a map the old core stands apart from the open ground below it.
