Kirundo is a provincial capital in the far north of Burundi, near the Rwandan border, in an area known for its lakes. On a map the town is a modest cluster of streets on a rise. Around it, rounded hills are divided into small farm plots, and to the north and east the shapes of several lakes break up the land.
This is not a place of long grids or dense blocks. The streets follow the ground, roads run along ridges and past the water, and houses thin out gradually into cultivated hillside. In black and white, that looseness is the character: the town looks less like a planned shape and more like something grown out of the terrain.
A Kirundo map poster brings the town and its surroundings into one frame, with the network of roads meeting in the centre and the outlines of the northern lakes nearby.
