Kish Island lies in the Persian Gulf, a short distance off Iran's southern coast. It is small, low and almost oval, formed from coral limestone, with no hills to break its outline. The map shows a road that hugs the coast all the way around. Inside it, a planned network of wide streets, hotels and shopping centres is concentrated on the eastern side.
Kish is a free trade zone and one of Iran's best-known holiday destinations, with its own international airport. On the southwest shore lies the rusting hull of a cargo ship that ran aground in the 1960s, popularly known as the Greek Ship. Inland are the excavated remains of the historic city of Harireh.
