Kitami lies in the Okhotsk region of eastern Hokkaido, in a broad basin crossed by the Tokoro River. The central area follows a regular grid, typical of towns planned during the settlement of Hokkaido, and it sits along the river and the railway. Around it, large rectangular fields stretch out towards forested hills.
The area became known in the early twentieth century as a major producer of peppermint, and for a time Kitami was one of the world's leading sources of mint oil. Today it is known for its onions, grown on a large scale in the surrounding fields. Winters here are long and cold, with some of Hokkaido's lowest temperatures.
