Kitamoto lies in central Saitama, north of Tokyo. It is one of a line of towns that grew along the JR Takasaki Line and National Route 17, and the highway largely follows the old Nakasendo route between Edo and Kyoto. On the map, the railway and the road run side by side from southeast to northwest, and the densest streets sit close to both.
Away from the station, the pattern relaxes into small residential lanes, school grounds and patches of farmland. To the west the land slopes gently down to the Arakawa, whose wide riverbed and embankments make a broad pale band along the edge of the town.

Arakawa floodplain
On the western side, the Arakawa river runs through a wide bed of open ground between its levees. On the poster it appears as a large area with no streets, which balances the dense town centre.
