Königswinter lies on the right bank of the Rhine, just upstream from Bonn. From above, the old town is a narrow strip of streets packed between the river and the steep, forested slopes of the Siebengebirge. A promenade and rail line run along the water, and ferries cross to the opposite bank.
Above the town rises the Drachenfels, a peak crowned by a ruined castle and linked to the Siegfried legend. The Drachenfelsbahn, opened in 1883, is one of the oldest rack railways in Germany still in operation. Nearby, the Petersberg hotel served for decades as the federal government's guesthouse.
A Königswinter map poster frames the town between two strong forms. The broad Rhine runs along one edge, and the Siebengebirge, crossed by winding paths and roads, fills the other. The riverside streets lie in the narrow space between them.
