Kolār lies in southeastern Karnataka, about seventy kilometres east of Bengaluru, on the dry upland of the Deccan plateau. The town is compact, with a dense older centre and newer layouts spreading outward along the main roads. Around it the land is dotted with granite hills and with tanks, the shallow reservoirs that have supplied water to farms in this region for centuries.
The district is best known for the Kolar Gold Fields, deep mines worked from the nineteenth century until their closure in 2001, located some distance southeast of the town. Kolār itself has an old temple to Kolaramma, and the rocky hills of Antaragange just outside town form a strong backdrop in any map drawn with a wide frame.
