Kolasib is the headquarters of Kolasib district in northern Mizoram, on the main highway that climbs from the plains of Assam toward the state capital, Aizawl. Like many towns in Mizoram, it is built along ridges. From above, its streets follow the high ground in long curves, with buildings clinging to the slopes on either side.
The surrounding country is steep and forested, cut by deep river valleys, and the map shows this sharply. Roads zigzag back and forth and rarely run straight for long, and the edges of the town fall away quickly into green land. For travellers coming from the north, Kolasib is one of the first sizeable towns in Mizoram.

The main road to Aizawl passes through Kolasib. It is the busiest line on the map and the axis most of the town is organised around.
