Kolding grew up where the Kolding Fjord ends in a shallow point, cutting inland from the Little Belt. On a map the water comes in as a long narrow wedge from the east and stops at the town. The Kolding Å river continues the line westward through the centre. The harbour and its quays sit at the meeting point, and the town spreads out around them.
Above the centre, the royal castle of Koldinghus stands on a rise beside the small Slotssø lake. The old shopping streets lie between the castle and the harbour. Beyond them are wide rings of residential streets, parks and green belts. The E45 motorway runs north to south along the western side and marks the outer edge of the built-up area.
A Kolding map poster suits a town that is known today for design as well as trade. It is home to the Design School Kolding, and the Trapholt art museum looks out over the fjord. Koldinghus, rebuilt after a fire in 1808 and now a museum, still dominates the view. On paper the fjord and the lake give the composition its balance.
