Koło lies on the Warta River in Greater Poland, and its old town was founded on an island between the river's channels. On the map, this gives the centre a clear, enclosed shape. The market square and the streets around it are surrounded by water, and bridges connect the island to the newer districts on both banks.
The ruins of a medieval castle stand near the river, a reminder of the town's role as a royal stronghold on the Warta. Beyond the centre, the town spreads out in residential areas and industrial zones. The town has long been associated with ceramics, including a well-known porcelain factory. Wide meadows follow the river through the valley.
