Konin lies on the Warta in eastern Greater Poland, and the river divides it into two clearly different halves. On the south bank sits the old town, with its small market square and a short grid of streets. Across the water, the new town built after the Second World War spreads out in broad blocks of housing, larger roads and industrial sites, so the map reads almost like two cities facing each other.
The Warta and its side channels create a wide belt of meadows and water through the middle of the city. North of Konin lies a chain of lakes, and the region is marked by lignite mining and power plants, whose open pits and reservoirs appear on a map as large, sharply cut shapes among the fields.
The city is also home to one of the oldest road markers in Poland, a stone pillar dated to 1151 that recorded the distance to Kalisz. A Konin map poster captures that range, from a twelfth-century milestone and a compact old town to the large-scale landscape of twentieth-century industry.

South of the river, the medieval market square and short streets form a tight core, while the northern side shows the larger blocks and roads of the post-war new town.
Lakes and pits
Lakes to the north and the reservoirs and pits left by lignite mining appear as large, clean shapes on the map, making the surrounding landscape unusually graphic.
