From above, Kosai is defined by water on two sides. To the east lies Lake Hamana, a large brackish lagoon, and the city's shoreline follows its coves and small peninsulas in a ragged, hand-drawn line. To the south, the coast along the Enshu-nada opens onto the Pacific in a long, nearly straight edge. Most of the street network sits in the land between the two.
The old Tokaido highway crosses the southern part of the city, and its route still shows as a thread of older settlement near the lake and the sea. Arai, once a separate town and part of Kosai since 2010, grew up around a checkpoint on that road. Farther west, the modern rail lines and main roads run roughly parallel to the coast toward Toyohashi in neighbouring Aichi Prefecture, giving the map a strong east–west grain.
North of the rail corridor, the pattern loosens. Residential streets thin out into cultivated fields, low wooded hills and scattered hamlets, so the drawing moves from dense blocks to open ground in a short distance. Arai checkpoint
Arai was a barrier station on the Tokaido during the Edo period, and its checkpoint building survives as a historic site. On the map it sits in the old street pattern close to the lake.
Road and rail corridor
Rail lines and main roads cross Kosai from east to west, linking Hamamatsu with Toyohashi. They form a clear band through the city, separating the coastal districts from the farmland and hills to the north.
