Kościan is a town in western Greater Poland, south of Poznań, and its map is shaped by water. The Obra river and its channels divide into several branches here, and the historic centre sits on land enclosed by them. From above, the old town shows up as a compact knot of streets around a market square, wrapped by thin lines of water and green banks.
Around that core, the town spreads out in newer residential districts, railway lines and farmland typical of the flat Wielkopolska plain. The contrast is clear on a map: a tight, medieval-scale centre with water all around it, and more open, regular development outside. Bridges and short causeways connect the old town to the rest.
