Kotamangalam lies in Ernakulam district, near the Periyar, Kerala's longest river. It is often called the gateway to the high ranges because the roads towards Idukki and the Munnar hills set out from here. On a map, the town sits where the flat midland meets the first rising ground, and its main roads leave the centre in several directions.
The street pattern is typically Keralan. It has no strict grid. Instead there is a busy central junction, main roads lined with buildings, and a dense scatter of lanes serving homes set among coconut and rubber plantations. The river and its tributaries add curving lines to the plan, and to the east the mapped streets thin out as the land climbs into forest.
