Kozan lies in the north-east of Adana Province, where the Çukurova plain meets the first slopes of the Taurus Mountains. The town sits at the base of a steep, rocky hill topped by a long fortress. Its streets fan out across the lower ground, and orchards and citrus groves spread beyond them toward the plain.
In the Middle Ages the town, then called Sis, served as a capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. The castle above it stretches along the ridge, with walls and towers visible from far across the valley. Today the town is known for its orange groves and for the dam and reservoir in the nearby hills.
