Kozienice lies in the Mazovia region of Poland, a short distance west of the Vistula. On the map, the town is compact and well defined, with a central market area, a grid of residential streets and a large park that was once the setting of a royal residence. To the west and south stretches the Kozienice Forest, one of the larger woodlands in central Poland.
The town has a long royal connection. Polish kings used the forest for hunting, and King Sigismund I the Old was born in Kozienice in 1467. Today the town is also known for a large power station on the Vistula, one of the biggest in the country.
