Kranj lies in the Gorenjska region of Slovenia, north of Ljubljana, with the Alps rising to the north. Its old town has one of the most distinctive sites in the country. It stands on a narrow rocky promontory at the confluence of the Sava and the Kokra, which has cut a deep canyon along the eastern side of the old centre.
On the map, the old town appears as a narrow, elongated wedge of streets pointing south toward where the rivers meet. Around it, the modern city spreads across the flatter land of the Sava plain, with housing estates, industrial areas and main roads. The motorway and railway run past in long lines, and Ljubljana's airport sits a short distance away.
The poet France Prešeren, author of the words of the Slovenian national anthem, spent his last years in Kranj and is buried here. A Kranj map poster brings together the rivers, the canyon and the medieval core in a composition that is compact yet full of layers.

The Kokra cuts a deep, narrow canyon along the old town's eastern edge, a dark, winding line that separates the historic core from newer districts.
Sava confluence
South of the old town, the Kokra flows into the Sava, and the meeting of the two rivers marks the point toward which the whole centre narrows.
