Kurnool lies in western Andhra Pradesh on the south bank of the Tungabhadra River, at the point where the smaller Handri joins it. From above, the city is bounded on the north by the broad, braided bed of the Tungabhadra. The older town sits near the confluence, while newer neighbourhoods spread south and west across a dry, rocky plain.
From 1953 to 1956, Kurnool was the capital of Andhra State, until the formation of Andhra Pradesh moved the seat of government to Hyderabad. Among the remains of its older past is the Konda Reddy Buruju, a fort tower in the city centre. Kurnool is also a common gateway for pilgrims travelling to the temple town of Srisailam.
