Kwidzyn lies in northern Poland, on high ground on the eastern side of the wide Vistula valley. On a map the old town sits on the edge of that escarpment, with the Gothic castle and cathedral at its heart and streets spreading out from there toward newer districts, while the lowland toward the river opens into fields and meadows.
The castle, built by the Teutonic Order, is known for its dansker, a tower connected to the main building by a long covered bridge on arches, one of the most distinctive structures of its kind. Together with the neighbouring cathedral it forms a compact ensemble that remains the visual anchor of the town, both on the ground and on the map.
A Kwidzyn map poster shows how medieval and modern layers meet. Around the castle and cathedral the streets are shorter and more irregular, while outer neighbourhoods follow straighter post-war plans.
