Lacey lies just east of Olympia, the Washington state capital, and the two cities merge along Interstate 5 and the old Pacific Highway. From above, the town is a patchwork of postwar and newer subdivisions, commercial strips and wooded parcels. The interstate draws a firm line straight through the middle.
Water frames the city on two sides. To the north, fingers of southern Puget Sound reach inland as long, narrow inlets, while the south is dotted with lakes ringed by homes and docks. Saint Martin's University, a Benedictine school founded in the late nineteenth century, has a wooded campus. It shows up as an open green shape in the street pattern.
A Lacey map poster shows a Pacific Northwest suburb in its real form. There is no single downtown, only a network of curving residential streets, broad arterials and patches of forest, with the lakes and saltwater inlets giving it edges.
