Ladybrand is a Free State town close to the border with Lesotho, a short drive from the crossing to Maseru. It was laid out in the nineteenth century on a regular grid, with the church and town centre near the middle. The Platberg, a flat-topped ridge, rises directly behind the town and frames it.
Many older buildings are made of local yellow sandstone, which gives the streets a consistent, warm character. The town is named after Lady Catharina Brand, mother of Johannes Brand, a president of the Orange Free State. Nearby sandstone outcrops shelter rock art and cave sites that draw visitors from both sides of the border.

On one side the slope of the Platberg interrupts the pattern. That gives the composition a natural edge that looks deliberate on the wall.
