Lake Elsinore is a city in Riverside County, built around the lake of the same name. The lake is often described as the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California. From above, it is a broad, rounded oval, and neighbourhoods wrap around its shores. The older downtown sits near the northern end of the lake, and newer subdivisions spread over the surrounding slopes.
To the west, the Santa Ana Mountains rise steeply, and the winding Ortega Highway crosses them toward the coast. To the east, Interstate 15 runs along the valley and connects the city with the Inland Empire and San Diego. On the map, curving suburban streets and cul-de-sacs contrast with the grid of the old downtown.
