Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet in Suffolk County, in the middle of Long Island, built around the lake that gives it its name. From above, the lake is an almost circular body of water. The streets around it mix grids with curving suburban roads that press close to the shore. The Long Island Expressway and the railway run a short way to the south.
The lake is the largest freshwater lake on Long Island. It is a kettle lake, formed when a block of glacial ice melted in place at the end of the last ice age. It has long inspired local legends, including stories of a lake spirit, and in the early twentieth century it was a popular summer resort. Nearby Ronkonkoma station is the eastern end of electrified service on the Main Line.
