Lakewood fills much of the ground between Denver and the Rocky Mountain foothills. It is one of the largest cities in Colorado by population, yet it is laid out mostly as low suburban neighbourhoods. On a map its section-line roads form a loose grid, broken by curving subdivision streets, reservoirs and greenways, until the western edge meets the hogback ridge and the steeper land beyond.
The city lives up to its name, with many small lakes and ponds scattered through its neighbourhoods and the larger open space of Bear Creek Lake Park in the south-west. Green Mountain sits inside the city as a broad plateau with no roads across it. The Denver Federal Center occupies a large block of land, and the W Line light rail runs west toward Golden.

West Colfax Avenue
The historic east–west highway runs straight through the northern part of the city toward Golden. It is a long commercial corridor that anchors the surrounding grid.
