From above, Lancaster sits where the River Lune bends toward Morecambe Bay. The historic centre is packed onto rising ground on the south bank, with Castle Hill and the Priory at its western edge. The streets below it form a tight, irregular knot. A one-way traffic loop wraps around them, and the river curves broadly along the northern side of the city.
The Lancaster Canal gives the map a second waterway. It traces a quieter line through the eastern side of town, keeping to the contour of the land, and then crosses the Lune further upstream on a stone aqueduct. Several bridges link the centre to Skerton on the north bank. To the east, the green space of Williamson Park and the long line of the M6 mark the edge of the built-up area.
The castle has served as a court and a prison for centuries, and it is where the Pendle witches were tried in 1612. South of the city, Lancaster University fills its own campus at Bailrigg, a self-contained cluster of buildings and paths. River Lune
The Lune curves along the northern side of the city on its way to Morecambe Bay. The bridges that cross it tie the centre to Skerton on the far bank.
Canal and aqueduct
The Lancaster Canal runs through the east of the city along the contour of the land, then crosses the Lune upstream on an aqueduct, which adds a slower, steadier line to the street map.
