Langao Chengguanzhen is the seat of Langao County in the Ankang area of southern Shaanxi province. It lies in the Daba Mountains, a rugged range between the Han River basin and Sichuan, and on the map the town is shaped almost entirely by the terrain: a long, narrow strip of streets following a river along the valley floor.
Because flat land is scarce, the town is dense and elongated, with roads and buildings stretched out along the water and steep slopes rising immediately behind. Bridges cross the river at intervals, linking the two banks. Beyond the valley, the map becomes a pattern of winding mountain roads and small settlements tucked into side valleys.
