Langsa lies on the east coast of Aceh province in northern Sumatra, facing the Strait of Malacca. It is a compact city: a modest grid of streets along the main road between Banda Aceh and Medan, with neighbourhoods thinning out into plantations, fields and low, wet land toward the coast.
The coastline around Langsa is not a clean line but a maze of tidal channels, fish ponds and mangrove forest. The city has protected part of this landscape as a mangrove park near its small port at Kuala Langsa, and those winding waterways give the map an unusually organic edge for a place of its size.
