Le Mée-sur-Seine lies in Seine-et-Marne, immediately downstream of Melun, on the southeastern side of the Île-de-France region. For most of its history it was a small village on the river, but in the second half of the twentieth century it grew quickly as part of the Melun urban area, gaining large residential neighbourhoods and new roads.
The map shows that history clearly. Near the Seine, the older streets of the village keep an irregular, compact form, while the newer districts spread away from the river in the looser curves and closes typical of postwar French planning. A railway line crosses the commune toward Paris, and parks and wooded areas break up the built fabric.
