This Quartier Latin is not in Paris but in Lyon, on the left bank of the Rhône in the city's seventh arrondissement. On the map it is shaped by the river: a broad band of water to the west, quays running along its edge, and streets laid out in a fairly regular pattern that extends east from the bank.
The name reflects the university presence here, with faculty buildings standing along the Rhône quays. Bridges link this bank to the Presqu'île, the narrow peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône that holds the historic centre of Lyon. The riverside promenades on the left bank form a long, continuous open strip.
