Lebedyan is on the upper Don in Lipetsk Oblast, one of the old towns of Russia's central black earth region. It was once famous for its horse fairs, which Ivan Turgenev described in the story Lebedyan in A Sportsman's Sketches. It is also the birthplace of the writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, author of the novel We.
The town sits on the high bank of the Don, and the map shows it laid out against that natural edge. A fairly regular grid of streets covers the higher ground. At its ends the streets break down into slopes and gullies that lead to the river. On the far side, the valley opens into floodplain and farmland.
