Lebrija stands on a low rise in the province of Seville, on the edge of the Guadalquivir marismas. Here the land flattens into former marshland that has largely been drained and turned over to irrigated farming. The historic centre climbs the slope in a knot of narrow, irregular streets around the church of Santa María de la Oliva.
The map makes the contrast very clear. On one side there is the compact, winding old town with whitewashed streets packed close together. On the other side is the plain below, crossed by long straight irrigation channels and field boundaries that make a large geometric pattern. Newer neighbourhoods fill the space between the two.
Lebrija is the birthplace of Antonio de Nebrija, the humanist who published the first grammar of the Castilian language in 1492.
