Leganés sits on the flat plateau just south of Madrid. On a map, the old village core is a small tangle of streets around the church and main square. Around it spread the dense blocks of flats built during the fast growth of the 1960s and 1970s. Wide avenues cut through the housing and lead out to the ring motorways that circle the Madrid region, so the town's edges look sharp and clearly drawn.
The town is more than dormitory housing. It has a campus of Carlos III University, several large industrial estates and wide green spaces on its outer edge. The Parque de Polvoranca to the west adds lakes and woodland to the plan. The local football club, CD Leganés, has spent several seasons in Spain's top division, and the town's old nickname, pepineros, recalls the vegetable gardens that once surrounded it.

The drawing moves from the fine grain of the old core to the coarser blocks of the housing estates, then to the curves of the motorway junctions. At the edges, the plain opens out again.
