Léogâne lies on a broad plain west of Port-au-Prince, between the mountains of Haiti's southern peninsula and the waters of the Gulf of Gonâve. From above, the town is a compact centre of streets set back from the shore. Rivers cross the plain, and farmland long used for sugar cane fills much of the space around it.
It is one of the oldest settlements in Haiti, with roots in the Taíno chiefdom of Xaragua, and it is known today for its Rara celebrations around Easter. The town lay very close to the epicentre of the 2010 earthquake and was heavily damaged. Much of it has since been rebuilt.

Rivers flow down from the mountains across the flat plain and wind through the fields around the town. On the map they are fine lines dividing the farmland.
Route to the capital
The main road runs through the town, east to Port-au-Prince and west along the peninsula. It is the strongest line in an otherwise open landscape.
