Lewiston sits where the Clearwater River flows into the Snake, at the bottom of a deep valley on Idaho's western border. Clarkston, Washington lies across the Snake, and the two towns share the confluence. The rivers carry the names of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which passed through in 1805.
The map follows the water. Downtown and the older districts fill the low ground at the confluence, protected by levees. Residential neighbourhoods climb the Normal Hill and Orchards benches to the south. North of the rivers, the escarpment of Lewiston Hill rises steeply, and the old highway winds up it in tight switchbacks.
Lewiston was the first capital of Idaho Territory, and thanks to barge traffic on the Columbia–Snake system it has a working inland port far from the ocean. A Lewiston map poster captures that unusual geography: two rivers, a canyon and a city built on the benches between them.
