Libourne sits at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Isle, east of Bordeaux in the Gironde. From above the town's origins are unmistakable: it is a bastide, a planned medieval town founded in the thirteenth century under English rule and named after Roger de Leyburn. Its streets still form a regular grid around a central arcaded square.
The rivers made Libourne a port. For centuries, wine from the surrounding vineyards, including the renowned areas of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol just to the east, was shipped from its quays. On a map the two rivers wrap around the old centre, with bridges crossing to the far banks and the town extending into newer districts inland.
