Limerick sits where the River Shannon, Ireland's longest river, widens toward its estuary. The river shapes the whole map. It curves through the city from east to west, and just north of the centre the smaller Abbey River splits off and rejoins it, forming King's Island. That island is where the medieval town began and where King John's Castle still guards the water.
South of the old core lies Newtown Pery, laid out in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its long, regular Georgian streets form one of the clearest grids in Ireland, and on a Limerick map poster they contrast neatly with the tangle of lanes on the island. Several bridges cross the Shannon here, each a short line across the widest water.
Upstream to the east, the University of Limerick campus spans both banks of the river, linked by a footbridge. The city is also associated with the 1691 Treaty of Limerick, said to have been signed on the Treaty Stone that stands beside Thomond Bridge.
