Limuru lies in the highlands north-west of Nairobi in Kiambu County, at an altitude of over two thousand metres. The town grew along the railway and the main road towards Nakuru, and its centre remains small and linear. On a map it is surrounded less by suburbs than by farmland: a patchwork of tea estates, smallholdings and patches of forest on rolling ridges.
The land around Limuru is known for tea, and the regular rows and field blocks of the estates give the map a distinctive texture. Just to the west, the ground drops steeply down the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, and the roads leaving town towards Naivasha begin a long descent to the valley floor.
The writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was born near Limuru, and the area appears throughout his work. A Limuru map poster shows the small town and its highland setting in clear black lines, a portrait of a place defined by its climate, its farms and its position at the edge of the Rift.
