Linjiang lies in southeastern Jilin Province, on the northern bank of the Yalu River, which forms the border between China and North Korea. From above, the town is a narrow strip of streets stretched along the river, squeezed between the water and steep, forested mountains. The North Korean town on the opposite bank is visible across the water.
The landscape here belongs to the wider Changbai Mountain region, with thick forests and deep valleys. Linjiang developed as a timber and river town, and its name means beside the river, which describes it well. The town's shape is set almost entirely by the terrain around it.
A Linjiang map poster captures this long, narrow form. The Yalu runs through the frame as a broad curve, the town follows the bank, and the mountains leave little room for anything else. The result is an unusual, linear composition, very different from the grid of a typical city.

Streets run mostly parallel to the river, forming a long, narrow built-up area. There is little room for side streets between the water and the slopes.
Mountain valleys
Forested mountains rise close behind the town, and side valleys cut into them. Roads follow these valleys, giving the map a few branching lines.
