Linshi is a town in the municipality of Chongqing, in the hilly country of south-western China. The landscape here is folded into ridges and valleys, so from above the streets rarely run straight for long. Roads follow the contours, curving around hillsides and dropping into valleys, and the built-up area takes its shape from the terrain rather than from any imposed grid.
Around the town, the land is worked into terraced fields and small plots, which on a map appear as fine, irregular lines following the slopes. Watercourses thread through the valleys, and the wider region drains toward the Yangtze.
