Litvínov lies in the Most district of north-west Bohemia, where the steep slopes of the Ore Mountains drop onto the basin below. On a map the contrast is immediate. The town's streets fill the lower ground, while dense contours and forest roads climb abruptly to the north toward the border ridge and the villages on the plateau.
The town combines an older centre, with a chateau associated with the Waldstein family, and extensive housing estates built during the twentieth century, including the monumental Koldům building. To the south lies the large chemical and refining complex at Záluží, and Litvínov is known across the Czech Republic for its ice hockey club, a long-standing member of the top league.

Záluží complex
The vast chemical works south of town form a large, intricate footprint of roads, rails and installations. On the poster it reads as an abstract industrial pattern at the edge of the city.
