Lockport is the county seat of Niagara County in western New York, and its map is organised around a single feature: the Erie Canal. The canal cuts through the city in a straight, deep channel, and the downtown grid gathers on both sides of it, linked by bridges. The line of water is the first thing you see.
The city is named for its locks, built to lift the canal up the Niagara Escarpment. The original Flight of Five, a staircase of stone locks, remains beside the modern locks and is one of the best-known engineering landmarks of the canal era. Beneath the city, the Lockport Cave tunnel was cut to carry water for industry.
