Long Beach sits on the Mississippi Gulf Coast between Gulfport and Pass Christian, facing the shallow waters of the Mississippi Sound. From above, the town is defined by one strong horizontal line: the coast road running along the sand, with the beach and harbor on one side and neighborhoods on the other. Streets run north from that edge in a loose, regular pattern that thins out as it reaches wooded land.
The shoreline has shaped the town's story as much as its map. Hurricane Katrina struck this coast in 2005 and destroyed much of the waterfront, and the rebuilding that followed changed the look of the blocks nearest the Sound. Earlier in the twentieth century the area was known for truck farming, especially radishes shipped north by rail, which explains the railway line that runs parallel to the coast.
