Longjing lies in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of Jilin province, close to the border with North Korea. The town fills a valley along the Hailan River, surrounded by low hills and farmland. On a map the river runs across the frame, with the town set along its banks and roads leading north toward the neighbouring city of Yanji.
The name means dragon well, after a well tied to the town's founding legend. Longjing has strong Korean heritage and is associated with the poet Yun Dong-ju, who went to school here before studying in Seoul and Japan. Korean and Chinese signs appear side by side in its streets.
