Longxi lies in the rugged northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep mountains and deep river valleys near the Three Gorges area. Towns here rarely have room to spread out, so the built-up area follows the lowest available ground, stretching along a watercourse with roads that bend with the terrain.
From above, that gives Longxi a linear, elongated shape. The main streets run parallel to the valley, and smaller lanes climb short distances up the hillsides before stopping. Beyond the town, the map empties into switchback roads and scattered hamlets reaching into the surrounding mountains.
