Łowicz lies in central Poland, in the Łódź Voivodeship, on the river Bzura. For centuries the town was held by the archbishops of Gniezno, the primates of Poland, and it grew into an important church centre. On a map, the old town is a compact grid of streets around an unusually large market square, one of the town's defining features.
At the square stands the cathedral basilica, and nearby are the remains of the primates' castle. The river valley lies along the edge of town, with meadows on the floodplain. Łowicz is also known across Poland for its folk culture: bright striped costumes, paper cutouts and a Corpus Christi procession in which many residents wear traditional dress.
