Maastricht sits in the far south of the Netherlands, on a stretch of the Maas close to both Belgium and Germany. The river divides the city. The larger historic centre lies on the west bank, and the Wyck quarter lies on the east. From above you can follow the curve of the old defences, parts of which still stand beside parks and moats.
Inside the centre, streets lead to two large squares, the Vrijthof and the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. Several bridges cross the Maas, including the Sint Servaasbrug, one of the oldest bridges in the country. In 1992 the city gave its name to the treaty that founded the European Union.
A Maastricht map poster is full of detail. The small Jeker stream threads through the old town, and the river runs broad and straight through the middle. To the south, the land rises towards Sint-Pietersberg, which is known for its marl tunnels. The composition has depth, water and a clear historic core.

The large open square of the Vrijthof anchors a dense network of old streets. Remnants of the city walls and green bastions trace its edges.
Sint-Pietersberg
South of the centre, the hill rises between the Maas and the Jeker. On the map the streets thin out into green space above a network of old marl tunnels.
